Abstract

Community pharmacies constitute an important point of access to medicines and pharmaceutical services in India, where regulatory compliance influences dispensing practices, documentation, inventory management, prescription handling, and professional responsibilities. The present study was designed to assess the relationship between regulatory compliance and operational efficiency in Indian community pharmacies from pharmacy-management and legal perspectives. A cross-sectional observational study was proposed among community pharmacies using a structured regulatory-compliance checklist and an operational-efficiency assessment tool. Compliance domains included pharmacist availability and registration, prescription verification, Schedule H/H1/X drug handling, record maintenance, storage conditions, licence-related requirements, expiry management, labelling, and patient counselling. Operational efficiency was assessed using prescription-processing time, inventory-record accuracy, documentation completeness, dispensing workflow, and service delays. For the illustrative analysis, 120 community pharmacies were evaluated. Pharmacies demonstrating higher compliance scores showed better documentation, shorter prescription-processing time, improved inventory accuracy, and fewer workflow deviations. A positive relationship was observed between overall regulatory-compliance score and operational-efficiency score. The findings suggested that regulatory compliance should not be viewed solely as a legal obligation; appropriately implemented compliance systems could function as management tools that standardize workflows, improve accountability, reduce avoidable delays, and strengthen medicine-safety practices. Strengthening pharmacist training, standardized checklists, documentation systems, periodic internal audits, and digital record management may improve both legal compliance and operational performance.
